Join us on the second Tuesday of the month.
We will be discussing the classic novel, The Awakening by Kate Chopin. Unearthed in the 1960s after being rejected by turn-of-the-century readers for its frank depictions of sex and depression, this novel is now considered a landmark of early feminism. Edna Pontellier, wife and mother of two, rejects her conventional life in exchange for a path of self-discovery. After a passionate affair with a man she meets while vacationing with her family on the Louisiana Gulf Coast, Edna no longer finds meaning or satisfaction in her domestic life and moves out. Although her quest for creative and personal freedom is a tragic one, this extraordinary novel captures the intensity of female resistance with sympathy and honesty.
Copies of the book are available at the library. Additionally, ebook and eaudiobook copies are available on both the Digital Library of Illinois and Hoopla.
