Learn about Lagom, a life philosophy taught to many Swedes early in life rooted in harmony, moderation and sustainability.

When planning a trip to Sweden for the first time in 2023 to explore her ancestry, Jan started researching Lagom, a life philosophy taught to many Swedes early in life. This fell in line with over a decade of research regarding life balance, a concern for many, especially in the US. Lagom is rooted in harmony, moderation, and sustainability. She frequently heard the mantra: “not too much, not too little, just right!”

While in Sweden, she interviewed individuals about what Lagom meant to them and observed it firsthand. She will talk about how we, as Americans, can incorporate Lagom into our lives to experience a happier, more productive existence while improving our relationships and finding greater joy in all we do.

Jan Peterson Hincapie is a 40-year veteran of the parks and recreation field, working in Illinois and Wisconsin during her career.  A pinnacle of the final years of her career was serving as Chairman of the Board for the Illinois Park and Recreation Association. Since retiring as the Director of Parks and Recreation for the Village of Lincolnwood, Illinois, Jan has consulted in the areas of strategic planning, community focus group/board facilitation, and executive coaching.  She has also done training for Wintrust Bank, schools, libraries, and city government.  She was the keynote speaker at an all-campus event at her alma mater, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, in 2023 and has spoken at ten state conferences, NRPA, and the Athletic Business Conference.

Jan lives in Northbrook, Illinois.  She loves to walk and bike.  Her family operates “Love Em Like You Do”, a pet care company.  They also love spending time at their beloved cottage at Whitewater Lake in Wisconsin.
