Join author Suzanne Slade and illustrator Cozbi A. Cabrera as they discuss the creation of their award-winning picture book, Exquisite.

Sibert Honor author Suzanne Slade and Caldecott Honor illustrator Cozbi A. Cabrera will discuss the creation of their picture book, Exquisite: The Poetry and Life of Gwendolyn Brooks. This stunning children's biography about the incomparable Gwendolyn Brooks, who became the first African American author to receive the Pulitzer Prize, received a Sibert Honor and Coretta Scott King Honor. Both Slade and Cabrera live in the Chicago area, like Brooks, a Bronzeville resident who served as Poet Laureate of Illinois for over 30 years. Join the fun and hear about the exciting process of creating this award-winning book including research, revisions, sketches, final art, and much more. The author and illustrator also look forward to answering any and all of your curious questions.

This presentation is recommended for kids ages 5 and up. Register here to get the Zoom invite. You need to register only once per family/screen.

This program is presented as part of the library’s One Book, Everyone Reads community reading program. Learn more about the series and this year’s selected book, Three Girls from Bronzeville by Dawn Turner, here.
