Join Olga Cardamone in an exploration of two parallel art movements that unfolded in Russia at the same time, Social Realism and Underground Art.
For the Soviet government, art was one of the most important propaganda tools, and the tradition of Soviet realism was formed early in the twentieth century to communicate the ideas of the superiority of working class citizens who strive to build a utopian communist society. At the same time, banned underground artists were ready to reveal a different side of Soviet life. During this lecture, we will look at some of the best examples of both.
