Building New Lives: Refugee Resettlement in Chicagoland

Discover how RefugeeOne supports refugees arriving in our area from around the world.

Join Zachary Dmyterko, communications manager for RefugeeOne, and learn the current challenges facing refugees globally and how this local organization is working to resettle and support refugees arriving to Chicagoland.

Since 1982, RefugeeOne has welcomed 20,000 refugees from every major world crisis including Rwandans fleeing genocide, Jews from the former Soviet Union, the Lost Boys of Sudan, Syrians displaced by civil war, Afghans who escaped the Taliban, and now Ukrainian families fleeing Russia’s invasion. Today RefugeeOne is the largest resettlement agency in Chicago. They provide comprehensive services  that help families to become self-reliant in their new home.

Zachary Dmyterko is the communications manager for RefugeeOne, where he actively interviews and shares the powerful stories of refugees in Chicago since June 2022. Fluent in English and Ukrainian, Zachary brings a unique perspective and works to share the voice of refugee in Chicago. As a Fulbright Ukraine Alumnus (2018-2019) and a graduate of Marquette University with a degree in International Affairs, Zachary has a deep understanding of the complexities of Eastern European conflicts. His academic focus on the ongoing conflict in Eastern Ukraine and the diplomatic situation in Eastern Europe has significantly influenced his professional journey. Additionally, he is an alumnus of the prestigious Les Aspin Center for Government in Washington D.C. Zachary's previous roles include being a News Correspondent for The Ukrainian Weekly, a Broadcast Journalist for UATV Channel, and a Program Assistant at the Congressional Office for International Leadership (COIL).
