Spark curiosity about skin, hair, bodies, and abilities–the physical things that make us who we are. This interactive art workshop provides ideas for meaningful connections with family and community.
Leaning into differences gives children agency in exploring and embracing diversity in our society. Pairing diverse books with prompts and activities encourages young children to explore self and group identity, and develop kindness and empathy. At this family workshop, kids will learn to make skin tone paint from just three colors, while adults discuss strategies for talking to kids about differences. Then kids get to teach their grown-ups how to mix colors and paint a family portrait.
This family workshop will be co-presented with Crystal Elliott-O’Connor, MAT ECE, MDiv FCC. With 30+ years in early childhood education and family support, Crystal has developed a unique set of skills and passions from which she works today as a consultant. She partners with individuals, agencies, and organizations to increase racial awareness and create a critical mass of like-minded folks working toward liberty in our society.
This series is in partnership with District 39 PTAs and PTOs. This program reflects the district’s DEIB monthly themes, which celebrate diverse identities, beliefs and traditions. This is a program for the whole family. Snacks will be provided.
