AuditoriumPulitzer finalist Michael Hawthorne shares his Chicago Tribune series reporting on unregulated microplastic pollution in the Great Lakes, the world's largest source of fresh surface water.
More than 40 million people in the United States and Canada depend on the Great Lakes for drinking water. Each glass of treated lake water is laden with tiny bits of plastic - microplastics - made of toxic chemicals linked to cancer and other diseases. Yet this pollution isn't regulated, and manufacturers are moving to dramatically increase the amount of plastics produced in the United States.
Pulitzer finalist Michael Hawthorne shares his Chicago Tribune series reporting, "Our Great Lakes: Awash in Plastic", which addresses the plastics dilemma.
Michael Hawthorne is an investigative reporter who focuses on the environment and public health for the Chicago Tribune. He is a 2025 StoryReach U.S. Fellow, an honor bestowed by the Pulitzer Center to support the telling of urgent, deeply reported stories impacting communities in the U.S. Midwest.
