Rising Out of Hatred by Eli Saslow
We will be discussing Rising Out of Hatred: The Awakening of a Former White Nationalist by Eli Saslow. Saslow, a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter, tells the powerful story of Derek Black, a former white nationalist who changed his heart and mind. The son of the founder of Stormfront, the largest racist community on the Internet, and the godson of David Duke, Derek was considered "the leading light" of the growing white nationalist movement at only 19. While attending college, his identity was revealed to the mostly liberal student body and he faced fierce backlash for his beliefs. But there were also students who reached out to him, and through those relationships, he began to question the science, history, and prejudices behind his worldview for the first time. With great empathy, Saslow asks what Derek Black's story can tell us about America's increasingly divided nature.
