Join Christopher White, Assistant Professor of Music Theory at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, as he discusses recent boom of Artificial Intelligence, art, and human creativity.
Professor White's presentation will address the recent popularity of artificial intelligence, particularly addressing AI-generated text, art, and music. He will discuss how artists and writers have grappled with mechanical innovations from moments in modern history, including the popularization of the record player in the early 20th century, the advent of computing in the 1950s, and the controversies surrounding Napster in the early 2000s. He will then provide an introduction to both the history of and the actual engineering behind contemporary AI models like ChatGPT and DALL-E-2. Through his presentation, he will ask provocative questions surrounding AI-generated content, including notions of authorship and the definition and role of art in a world of AI.
Christopher White is Assistant Professor of Music Theory, having previously taught at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Yale University. Chris received his PhD from Yale and has also attended Queens College–CUNY, and Oberlin College Conservatory of Music.
