American Radicals by Holly Jackson
We will be discussing American Radicals: How Nineteenth-Century Protest Shaped the Nation by Holly Jackson. This timely history of nineteenth-century activists explores the work of the lesser known dissenters that sparked the social revolution of the tumultuous Civil War era. While figures such as Frances Wright, William Lloyd Garrison and James Forten are largely forgotten today, the causes they were fiercely devoted to lay the groundwork for iconic reformers such as Frederick Douglass, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Henry David Thoreau. A panoramic work of the firebrands who vowed to continue the revolution they believe the founding fathers had only begun.
