Join art historian Mary C. Woodward to explore Elizabethan England, where power and politics were vividly expressed through portraits, palaces, and decorative arts in the age of Queen Elizabeth I.
With the recent death of Queen Elizabeth II, a second Elizabethan Age of English history came to an end. We will look into the past and recall the first Queen Elizabeth, who reigned from 1558 to 1603. And we will examine the art created during her reign as the Queen and her courtiers expressed their dominance through their portraits and palaces, decorative arts and stately homes.
Mary C. Woodward, with over 40 years in museums and historic homes and degrees in Art History, has worked at institutions ranging from the Cleveland Museum of Art to President James K. Polk’s birthplace. Since moving to Massachusetts in 2010, she has held roles at The Old Manse, the Concord Museum, and currently serves as Lead Guide at Historic New England’s Winslow Crocker House. She also lectures on art history and previously ran the Gallery at the Chelmsford Center for the Arts. In her free time, she enjoys “pretending to garden.”
