Enjoy an in-depth exploration of the first ladies who served during the Gilded Age, a period marked by unprecedented economic growth, industrialization, and social stratification in the United States.

From Lucy Hayes to Ida McKinley, these women occupied a unique space at the intersection of politics, social reform, and cultural expectations from 1877 to 1900. Learn how these first ladies leveraged their positions to influence national discourse on issues such as civil service reform, veterans' welfare, and public health, all while navigating the evolving role of women in society. Through critical analysis of their personal letters, their apparel, artifacts, and key initiatives, this program will illuminate the complexities of their contributions and the broader impact of their leadership during one of the most transformative eras in American history.

As the director of Education & Curatorial Services at the National First Ladies Library & Museum, Stephanie Bohnak brings a distinguished background and unwavering dedication to the institution. With an MA in history and public history from Bowling Green State University, specializing in women's history and American enslavement, Bohnak is dedicated to illuminating often-overlooked narratives in American history. Her BA in history from the University of Akron, accompanied by minors in anthropology and classics, provides a comprehensive understanding of historical contexts and concepts. Additionally, Stephanie Bohnak holds an AS in culinary arts from Sullivan University, reflecting a diverse skill set that enriches educational endeavors with interdisciplinary perspectives. In this role, Stephanie Bohnak leads educational programming and outreach while assisting in collections management and curation, ensuring exhibits are both engaging and historically accurate. Through innovative programming and research, exhibits, and outreach, Stephanie Bohnak honors the legacies of America's first ladies while fostering historical literacy and inclusivity for all.
