Artist and Evanston Art Center faculty member Azadeh Hussaini will discuss the history of performance art as well as works of some of the most influential performance artists.
In this program, we discuss the history of performance art, its concept, styles and later developments. Also, we examine the works of some of the most influential performance artists. Performance art is a way of engaging directly with social reality and allows people to express themselves to be connected with others. Performance can be created through actions performed by the artist or by other participant's engagements. As theorist Jonah Westerman remarked, "performance is not (and never was) a medium, not something that an Artwork can be but rather a set of questions and concerns about how art relates to people and the wider social world."
Azadeh Hussaini is a Chicago-based, Iranian-American interdisciplinary artist and art educator. She holds an MFA in non-figurative painting from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and a BFA in painting from Azad Art University in Tehran.
She is co-founder of Didaar Art Collective, a Chicago based Iranian Artists community, curator and board member at Theatre- Y, a Chicago based theater company and Art Gallery Advisory Committee for the Wadsworth Family Gallery at Lewis University.
Her work embodies the exploration of her emotional responses to her own experiences while concurrently ascertaining the basic primordial desires within the human condition. Hussaini aspires to discover commonalities among us while providing forums for social discussion and assertiveness.
The Evanston Art Center is dedicated to fostering the appreciation and expression of the arts among diverse audiences by offering extensive and innovative instruction in broad areas of artistic endeavor through classes, exhibitions, interactive arts activities, and community outreach.
